Hmmm, a dilemma with your hawk moth. The mysterious white fluff could most likely be the pupating larvae of wasp. [link]
or an easier solution would probably be mold.

The easiest way would probably remove it with tweezers, but me careful.

i find bugs really annoying to preserve because they dry out and become really brittle. You have to keep them behind a glass container because exposure to the elements will create them to fall apart.

i think its mold because its soft and kind of looks like cat fur thats sticking out about 2cm off the body.. it was a fresh specimen and ive never had one before, ive always managed to find already dried or ant eaten ones so they dont have any guts.. its in a jar on a piece of tissue and its fused to the tissue.. but ill give it a go tomorrow with the pulling off of the fuzz.
